Epoxy and Urethane Floor Options

Epoxies

Most applications for epoxy-based floors include:

  • Aisle ways
  • Manufacturing facility floors
  • Battery charging areas
  • Auto service centers
  • Warehouses
  • Airplane hangars

The two main epoxy products are polyamide, which typically contains about 30% solvent and has a high VOC. The other is aliphatic, which is typically 100% solids and very low VOC.

  • Polyamide Epoxies: Ideal for low-traffic areas, line striping or when mechanically abrading the floor isn’t possible. These products are limited to 3 to 5 mils per coat due to the percentage of solvent.
  • Aliphatic Epoxies: Most widely used because of their low VOC and the ability to be applied thickly, acting as a leveling coat on thin mil systems, as broadcast coats for quartz systems and as a resin base for slurry/trowel systems up to ¼”. Epoxy can be applied as a topcoat, but urethanes offer better wear characteristics because of their chemical composition.

Urethanes

Are ideal as a topcoat over an epoxy base because they are UV stable and will not yellow or amber over time. They also have up to three times better abrasion resistance than epoxy.
